President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the current government will implement and deliver “housing for all” in its true sense.
He made the announcement at a mega rally organised by the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) on Friday night, the “Dhivehinge Raajje” rally.
It is a key electoral pledge of President Muizzu to ensure housing for every family in the Maldives before the end of the current presidential term. In line with this commitment, several projects will be implemented this year, with additional projects scheduled for the upcoming year.
Speaking at the rally, the President announced that construction of 825 housing units in various islands across the Maldives will begin this year through private-sector contractors, while a further 1,100 housing units will be developed in 16 additional islands under next year’s budget. He added that 3,000 housing units are currently under construction in the Male’ area under the Bank of Maldives (BML), while work on an additional 4,500 units will begin soon.
The President further said the land reclamation for the ambitious Rasmale’ project will be completed within five months. The list of 15,000 beneficiaries who will receive residential land plots from Rasmale’ will be determined before the reclamation work concludes, and the land allotment policy will be announced next week, he said.
Referring to the housing projects initiated by the previous government, the President said all recipients of flats and land would receive what they were promised. He further assured that the dredging work would be undertaken to hand over the land assigned from areas yet to be reclaimed.
