President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that 52 massage parlours have been closed in a short period as part of government efforts to tackle the issue.
During a community meeting with residents of Galolhu ward of Male’ City, the President acknowledged that massage parlours are a major social concern, repeatedly highlighted by citizens in previous community meetings. He said authorities, including Maldives Immigration and Maldives Police Service, continuously inspect such locations and premises.
President Muizzu said a special operation began on 9 December with additional resources, and 52 parlours were closed through joint operations by authorities over the last week. Of these, 24 were closed by authorities while 28 were voluntarily closed by business owners. He assured that the authorities would continue the operation around the clock.
The President further noted that illegal foreign workers found at these establishments are being arrested and deported, with about 10 people detained so far.
Meanwhile, a special task force, the National Task Force on Combating Illegal Expatriate Operations and Businesses has been formed, including the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology, Maldives Police Service, and Maldives Immigration. The task force is investigating and shutting down suspected illegal businesses operated by foreigners.
