Maldives and Sri Lanka seek closer parliamentary cooperation

The Maldives and Sri Lanka have focused on strengthening inter-parliamentary cooperation through their respective friendship groups during talks between President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and Sri Lanka’s parliamentary speaker, Dr Jagath Wickramaratne.

Sri Lanka’s Speaker of Parliament, Dr Jagath Wickramaratne, paid a courtesy call on President Muizzu during the Maldivian leader’s ongoing state visit to Sri Lanka.

The discussions centred on enhancing collaboration via the Maldives–Sri Lanka Parliamentary Friendship Group and the Sri Lanka–Maldives Parliamentary Friendship Association, with both sides stressing the importance of deeper institutional partnerships, including capacity-building and knowledge-sharing between legislative bodies.

During the meeting, both sides also highlighted the long-standing friendship between the two countries, encompassing close government relations as well as strong people-to-people ties.

The talks concluded with an agreement to explore new avenues for cooperation and to facilitate future exchanges between lawmakers, underlining a shared commitment to further strengthening bilateral relations.

President Dr Muizzu is currently undertaking a state visit to Sri Lanka from 3 to 6 May at the invitation of President Anura Kumara Disanayaka. He is accompanied by the First Lady, Sajidha Mohamed.
