The Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources has officially opened applications for the third batch of its Marine Hatchery Skills Development Programme, aimed at building local technical expertise in the rapidly growing field of reef fish aquaculture.
The 14-day basic mariculture course is scheduled to take place from 10 to 21 October at the Kaafu Atoll Maniyafushi Research and Training Facility. Jointly executed by the Ministry and the Maldives Marine Research Institute (MMRI), the initiative is supported by the TRANSFORM Project with financial and technical assistance from the World Bank.
Designed to provide comprehensive practical and theoretical knowledge, the training will cover key modules including aquaculture system operations, live feed culture, disease identification and prevention, and environmental protection. Participants will gain specialised skills in breeding and rearing four main species including grouper, sea cucumber, indigenous clownfish, and pearl oysters, alongside theoretical lessons on seaweed farming.
To ensure fully immersive learning, the 15 selected participants will reside at the Maniyafushi facility for the duration of the programme. MMRI confirmed that round-trip transport between Male’ and Maaniyaafushi, as well as accommodation and meals, will be fully provided for all participants.
Prospective applicants must submit a completed application form along with a copy of their National ID card to the MMRI or via email at [email protected] before 2:00 pm on 17 September. The Ministry highlighted that due to the limited capacity of 15 slots, selection will be strictly prioritised on a first-come, first-served basis.
This upcoming training follows the launch of the programme’s second batch last month, marking continued momentum in the nation's efforts to diversify its marine sector and foster sustainable aquaculture practices.
