Healthcare infrastructure in Shaviyani Atoll has received a major boost with significant upgrades on the islands of Feevah and Narudhoo, inaugurated by the Minister of Health, Family, and Welfare, Geela Ali.
On Feevah, a newly opened extension building at the local health centre has officially elevated its operations to round-the-clock service, replacing the previous 16-hour daily limit. The inauguration ceremony was attended by senior ministry officials, island council members, and health centre staff.
Speaking at the event, Minister Geela emphasised that the transition to 24-hour care is a monumental milestone for the island. The new facility now houses administrative operations and the Public Health Unit, which the Minister noted will help streamline services and support the broader goal of making Feevah a model island for public health and disease prevention.
Meanwhile, healthcare access was similarly transformed on the neighbouring island of Narudhoo with the official launch of new laboratory services at the Narudhoo Health Center. The facility marks the 21st laboratory opened across the atolls under the incumbent administration, aligning with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s key presidential pledge to establish fully functioning lab services in all inhabited islands.
Previously, residents of Narudhoo were forced to travel to neighbouring islands simply to undergo routine medical tests and blood work—a considerable logistical burden for the small community. With the new lab now operational, locals have immediate, convenient access to essential diagnostic services right on their home island.
Following the respective inauguration ceremonies on both islands, Minister Geela toured the new facilities and met directly with management and staff to discuss ongoing healthcare delivery and future community needs.
