President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom assumed office in 2013 with an all-inclusive development policy. Under the objective, President Yameen has been successful in enhancing sectors such as tourism, fisheries, construction and infrastructure.
Agriculture has been one of the main income sources of Maldives. Strategic steps and measures have been taken to enhance the sector. In this regard, over USD 320,000 have been spent in developing young and new farmers in the past four years.
One such other field has advanced in the past four years is the agriculture sector of Maldives. The administration has aimed at doubling the number of individuals who take up farming as a profession, while also trying to provide profitable markets and technologically advanced harvesting methods for the farmers. With the revolution of the agriculture sector, the administration expects Maldivian farmers to attain an annual income of USD 389,000.
According to the statistics of Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture, a total of 7,536 farmers, which include 544 men and 3,992 women from 78 islands have registered as farmers in the past four years. With youth being one major focus, the administration has aimed at special loan schemes for young farmers. In this regard, over USD 376,000 have been allocated to grant loans for 86 individuals, which include 50 men and 36 women from a total of 9 atolls.
