New President and Vice-president will be sworn in November 17: Government

The government of the Maldives has announced the President and Vice President elected in the presidential election are expected to be sworn in on November 17.

In a statement issued by Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government noted voting proceeded smoothly and peacefully with no reported incidents, adding no major issues were reported in the vote counting process as well as with the voters list, which will affect the results.

Moreover, the foreign ministry stated voting took place in the presence of a record number of representatives of candidates, observers and monitors. In this regard, 945 representatives of candidates, 2,610 local observers and international observers from 11 agencies, and 3,329 local monitors and a number of international monitors were active during the election.

Official results will be announced within the next seven days, before 30 September.

This was the third presidential election held in the Maldives, following the adoption of the 2008 Constitution, which paved the way for multi-party democracy in the Maldives.
