Maldives calls for involvement of businesses in environment protection

Maldives have stressed on the role of business enterprises in environmental protection and calls for the involvement of the public and private sector in such efforts.

Giving the final statement at the United Nations Climate Summit in Poland, Minister of Environment of Maldives Dr. Husaain Rasheed Hassan said countries continue to be concerned by what appears to be deliberate attempts to isolate loss and damage in negotiations. He said loss and damage is an undeniable part of the reality today and must be reflected by incorporating it into the transparency frame book, global stock take and finance.

The minister stressed on the need to identify how finance flows, both public and private reflect on the 1.5-degree goal and reaching those who need support the most, especially small island developing states and the least developed countries.

This year's summit include countries in the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP24), Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP 14) and the Conference of Signatories to the Paris Agreement (CMA 1). About 20,000 people from 190 countries take part in the event, including politicians, representatives of non-governmental organisations, scientific community and business sector.
