Maldives Immigration denies holding Azima's passport

Maldives Immigration has assured the passport of former Minister of Legal Affairs at President's Office Aishath Azima Shakoor was not held by the authorities. The comments from Maldives Immigration came following the statements made at a press conference held by the coalition of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People's National Congress (PNC) saying her passport has been held by the authorities.

Speaking to PSM News, Controller General of Immigration Mohamed Ahmed Hussain refuted rumours that Azima's passport was held, adding passports of anyone belonging to neither PPM nor PNC have been held by the authorities.

However, interim president of PNC, Parliamentarian Abdul Raheem Abdulla revealed Immigration is in the process of holding passports of senior members of PPM and PNC. The opposition coalition made the statement at a time when Azima is out of the country.

The state has raised charges against Azima alleging she assisted in money laundering and providing false information to authorities. Criminal Court has handed over the necessary documents to Azima regarding the case.
