Home minister stresses on the importance of strengthening governance in atolls

Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla has revealed the most important step towards strengthening governance in Maldives is strengthening governance in atolls. Home Minister Imran made the remarks at the ceremony held at the Local Government Authority (LGA) to unveil the local councils' "Performance Index 2017".

Minister Imran noted, while Maldives boasts a history of 2500 years, the approximately 1000 years of documented history stands proof to the unity of the country. Speaking in this regard, Minister Imran said the culture, tradition and unity were protected and maintained up to this year, due to the friendliness and unity among the communities.

Describing the ability of Maldives to remain independent as part of the country's proud heritage the Minister said, the feat was able only through the unity among the people. Home Minister revealed, history clearly states the islands and capital held good relations.

Minister further said the councils can be empowered with the assistance of Local Government Authority (LGA). Highlighting the importance of amending the Decentralization Act to meet modern needs, Minister Imran said the challenges and issues in the current system will be solved in the coming days.
