Parliament of Maldives has approved a motion to invite Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address a parliament sitting during his scheduled state visit. The motion was approved by the consensus of all 81 parliamentarians.
In his first tour of the region since being re-elected, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's first stop is to be Maldives. His state visit has been scheduled from June 7-8.
When the Speaker of Parliament opened the motion to debate, members of the main ruling party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) said the decision to make Maldives the first stop in the tour stands proof to strengthening foreign relations between the two countries. They added it would be an honour for someone of Modi's calibre to address a parliament sitting. Even opposition parliamentarians supported the motion.
The visit would be his second official trip to Maldives since first assuming office in 2014.
