National airline, Maldivian, has announced it will commence scheduled flights to Maafaru International Airport in Noonu Atoll on Sunday with the fare priced at USD 48.64.
The airport, which was completed under a grant of USD 60 million from Abu Dhabi Development Fund, has a 2,200 metre-long and 40-metre-wide runway. The airport was competed in August last year and the airport had its test flights in October last year.
The government recently decided to increase the size of the runway of the airport to land Airbus A380, the largest passenger aircraft currently in operation. The government also completed an Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) as part of the expansion.
