Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) has revealed deaths by cardiac diseases have significantly decreased since the establishment of the cath lab in National Cardiac Centre.
Speaking at a press conference held to disseminate information regarding the cardiac centre, Senior Consultant Interventional Cardiologist Dr. Ali Shafeeq said major milestones have been achieved since the establishment of the cardiac centre. In this regard, Dr. Shafeeq revealed over 5,000 procedures have been performed within the past 3 years and 6 months, adding with the establishment of the cath lab, deaths caused by cardiac diseases have been significantly reduced in Maldives. IGMH revealed that 325 primary angioplasties were completed at the cath lab within the past 3 years to treat patients with heart attacks.
Furthermore, during the press briefing, information on future plans of the centre was also revealed. In this regard, the centre noted efforts are underway to introduce open heart surgery this year, in addition to holding trainings on procedures done in the cath lab.
