Health Emergency Operation Centre (HEOC) has revealed a tourist who tested positive for COVID-19 in Maafushi, Kaafu Atoll had spent 27 days in the island.
Speaking at a press conference, Spokesperson of HEOC Dr. Fathimath Nazla Rafeeq said the tourist had tested positive from the exit sample taken before departure. Noting the tourist had spent 27 days in Maafushi, Dr. Nazla said contact tracing as well as random sampling is underway to identify the community spread situation of the island. She added the island has been placed under monitoring from November 22 onwards, banning entry and exit from the island.
Maafushi is one of the most prominent islands in the Maldivian guesthouse industry.Since guesthouses were permitted to reopen on October 15, several guesthouses in Maafushi have resumed operations. Maafushi was also the first island to reopen guesthouses upon the government’s decision to resume guesthouse operations in the Maldives.
