COVID-19 cases in the Maldives surpass 100,000

Health Protection Agency (HPA) has revealed the total number of positive COVID-19 cases recorded in the Maldives has surpassed 100,000 following the detection of 816 new COVID-19 cases.

HPA said 816 new COVID-19 cases were recorded in the past 24 hours, with 413 cases reported from Greater Male' region. Meanwhile, 249 cases were recorded in inhabited islands and 92 cases were recorded in resorts. The total number of positive cases is now at 100,451 following the latest positive cases detected in the Maldives. Moreover, there are 5,118 active cases in the country with 25 patients receiving care admitted in facilities.

Meanwhile, several islands are experiencing a community spread with COVID-19 cases on the rise again. As such, Maafushi Jail has been put under emergency operation due to the alarming situation of COVID-19.

The prison has decided to take extra precautions after the detection of positive COVID-19 cases from seven officers and 14 inmates. As a precautionary measure, all visiting meetings have been suspended under further notice and all lawyer meetings, family meetings, and court hearings are to be conducted online.

Furthermore, a further 545 individuals have received the booster dose for COVID-19 in the past 24 hours under the nationwide vaccination programme. The number of individuals who received the booster dose has now reached 29,089 in the Maldives.

Over 368,000 individuals have completed the second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine across the country.
