Maldives tourism pioneer George Corbin arrives for 50th anniversary

Ministry of Tourism has announced one of the key pioneers of Maldives tourism George Corbin has arrived to participate in the golden jubilee celebrations of Maldives tourism. He was received at Velana International Airport (VIA) by Minister of Tourism Abdulla Mausoom and Minister of Health Ahmed Naseem.

Minister Mausoom said he will be participating in the ceremony to launch the tourism-related stamps on February 16 and appear on a talk show on February 17, which aims to educate students and the public on the tourism business. He said numerous activities have been scheduled to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Maldives tourism to make this a particularly successful year.

George Corbin highlighted the progress made in the Maldives tourism industry and said he will be holding meetings with the relevant stakeholders during his six-day visit and working to increase the number of tourist arrivals from the US.

The Italian travel agent, Corbin, first visited the Maldives in 1971 at the request of Minister Naseem to review the potential of introducing tourism in the country. He then visited in 1972 with a group consisting of 12 Italian tourists, marking it the first time tourists visited the Maldives.
