Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has achieved a record with 155 tonnes of fish purchased by a boat in a single day.
Manager of Felivaru Fisheries Complex Mohamed Ibrahim said MIFCO acquired the boat during the administration of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. He said 155 tonnes is also the maximum capacity of the boat, and that it had been brought to operation despite all the necessary renovations not yet being completed on the vessel.
The boat, named Jazeera 102, had purchased 155 tonnes of fish in Thinadhoo, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll. MIFCO further said it is working to acquire more vessels for purchasing fish.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said MIFCO will begin offering better rates to fishermen from March. He also said MIFCO will become financially self-sufficient in mid-2022 and would no longer be dependent on the State Trading Organisation (STO).
