Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) is conducting a special tax-related programme aimed at businesses in the tourism sector.
MIRA will be inspecting businesses to determine the challenges in implementing tax policies and provide solutions, as part of the programme. The authority began the inspections at guesthouses in Maafushi, Kaafu Atoll.
A team from MIRA visited the guesthouses, providing the relevant information and assistance to the operators, and notified businesses that are scheduled for an audit. The team will also be investigating businesses that are suspected to have been involved in tax fraud.
MIRA plans to hold similar programmes in more islands as part of the efforts to improve and strengthen the tax system. The authority stated that it is taking various measures to solve the issues in paying taxes related to transactions between newly opened resorts and multinational companies. It added that it will take action against taxpayers who are not fully adhering to the set regulations.
