Mayor of Addu City Ali Nizar has stated that the new building to be added to Addu Equatorial Hospital (AEH) will solve the space constraints faced in the facility. The project to develop the new building is currently in the tender stage.
Speaking to PSM News, Mayor Nizar expressed that Addu Equatorial Hospital (AEH), though transformed into a tertiary hospital, was not originally designed for this purpose. He mentioned plans for a new two-story building with 19 private rooms, additional theaters, and other services, including the nearing completion of the CAT lab. In addition, he said the government is also actively seeking a heart surgeon. While he acknowledged satisfactory health services in Addu, he emphasised the need for improvements in various aspects.
Addu City Council noted significant advancements in the health system over recent years. AEH has successfully performed several major operations. Dialysis services have been expanded, and new services are now available at the Hulhumeedhoo health center. Moreover, all islands have enough ambulances, with Maradhoo to receive one in September. In addition, the council stated that land has been provided for the extension building at the Feydhoo health centre to address space constraints and emergency health care services have been improved using a sea ambulance and a helicopter, with support from the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF), for patient transportation.
