The Maldives National University (MNU) has appointed new deans for two of its faculties. The appointments were made following the completion of the previous deans’ four-year terms.
New deans were appointed to the university’s Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Health Sciences at a ceremony held Tuesday. Dr Aminath Riyaz was appointed to the Faculty of Arts while Dr Aishath Shanoora was appointed to the Faculty of Health Sciences.
Dr Aiminath Riyaz joined MNU in 1992 as Librarian at the Institute of Health Sciences. She worked in various library roles, including Chief Librarian, for around 15 years. She rejoined MNU in 2018 and worked as a Lecturer and Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Arts, and as an Assistant Professor from 2019.
MNU recognised Dr Aminath Riyaz for her previous contributions as a Head of Department, including department management, faculty development efforts and participation in faculty and university committees.
Speaking at the appointment ceremony, Dr Aminath Riyaz said the faculty should provide fair and inclusive services to students with different abilities. She further said the university must ensure that the education provided to students makes them beneficial to society beyond the university campus.
Dr Aishath Shanoora has served at MNU for 19 years. She first joined the university in 2001 as a Principal Instructor of Education. She has since served as Assistant Lecturer, Lecturer and Assistant Professor. In 2022, she was appointed the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, and this is her second term in the role.
During the ceremony, Dr Shanoora outlined her vision for the next four years. She noted that new programmes will be introduced in nationally important areas and postgraduate education will be further strengthened. She also highlighted the impact of modern technology, including AI, on the health sector.
