Maldives Posts Limited (MPL) has revealed plans to shift Male' Commercial Harbour to Thilafushi.
Speaking to PSM News, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Shahid Ali revealed several days are taken to clear containers from the main port in Male' which causes heavy traffic in the area. He said the solution is to increase the harbour space. However, Shahid said the existing harbour cannot be expanded, adding the government has decided to change the main harbour to Thilafushi.
Moreover, CEO of MPL revealed discussions are now underway with relevant authorities, the first phase of the project will be concluded in the next two or three years. He described the change will ease the process of loading and unloading of containers and improve the traffic flow in the area.
The ease in clearance process will bring significant changes to the market prices of goods, according to businesses.
