Maldives to host the 2021 SAFF Championship

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has revealed the Maldives has been selected to host the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Championship to be held in October this year.

The president announced the news via a tweet on August 9. In his tweet, President Solih congratulated the Football Association of Maldives (FAM) and others in the sports fraternity who worked hard to make this possible.

President of FAM Bassam Adeel Jaleel revealed the Maldives won the bid to host the 13th edition of the SAFF Championship to be held from October 1-15 this year, following a meeting held between SAFF member nations to select a new host for this year’s tournament. The tournament had to be moved from Bangladesh due to the worsening COVID-19 situation in the country.

This would be the second time the tournament is hosted by the Maldives, with the country also having co-hosted the 2008 edition with Sri Lanka. Maldives won the 2008 tournament, as well as the most recent edition held in Bangladesh in 2018.
