Campaign begins to provide legal assistance to migrant workers

Public Interest Law Centre (PILC) has announced it has begun a campaign to provide legal assistance to migrant workers.

The Migrants Matter campaign is funded by the small grants project of The Asia Foundation. PILC stated the campaign aims to increase awareness of Maldivian laws for migrant workers in the country.

The centre stated the campaign will also provide information to the public on legal matters on social media platforms using English and three other languages common in the migrant workforce. The one-year campaign focuses on providing information on the legal rights of migrant workers, labour laws, and human trafficking. PILC also aims to increase awareness of labour violations and solve the various challenges faced by migrant workers.

Furthermore, individuals can volunteer for legal aid campaigns to be held in five islands, as part of the main campaign. PILC began the Migrants Matter campaign as part of its Labour Migration in Maldives project, which aims to formulate an action plan to solve the challenges faced by South Asian migrant workers, especially Bangladeshi nationals. The centre will also be using the information obtained from the project to give recommendations to the relevant government institutions.
