The finance ministry is seeking contractors to develop indoor sports complexes in Alifushi and Dhuvaafaru in Raa Atoll, Naifaru in Lhaviyani Atoll, Ukulhas in Alifu Alifu Atoll, Gan in Laamu Atoll, Fuvahmulah City, as well as Feydhoo and Meedhoo in Addu City.

Interested companies are required to submit a bid security of USD3,800 for the projects in Alifushi and Meedhoo, and USD4,200 as the bid security for the other projects. The finance ministry will only accept bids from companies that are registered at the Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure. The companies are also required to pay a non-refundable registration fee to participate in the bidding process.

Currently, most of the major sports events in the Maldives are held in the Greater Male’ Region. However, the government aims to provide facilities for athletes in the atolls to renew their interest in sports across the country.

Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Community Empowerment has stated the sports complexes will allow athletes to compete in handball, netball, volleyball, and basketball events in all parts of the country.

The government has allocated USD5.4 million in the state budget for sports-related projects, and USD6 million for sport-related infrastructure projects.
