Imports decrease by 4% in April compared to 2022

The Maldives Customs Service (MCS) has revealed the value of imports decreased by 4% in April 2023 compared to the same period in 2022.

The statistics of MCS show that goods worth USD292 million were imported to the Maldives in April this year, which is a decrease of 4% compared to the USD305 million received during the same period in 2022. India, Oman, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), China, and Singapore, were the biggest contributors to imports. Fuel was the largest import in April 2022. The value of imports from this category stood at USD54 million. The next largest imports were various food products worth USD53 million.

Meanwhile, exports from the Maldives increased in April 2022. As such, goods worth USD13 million were exported from the Maldives in April this year while the figure stood at USD12 million during the same period last year. The Maldives exported the most goods to Thailand, the United Kingdom (UK), Germany, Mauritius, and India. According to statistics, 45% of exports went to Thailand. The UK accounted for 18% of the exports, while Germany accounted for 11% of the exports. Among the most exported items include various frozen fish products.

The statistics showed the revenue in April also decreased. The Maldives received revenue of USD19.7 million in April 2023 which is a 16% decrease compared to the USD23.4 million received in April last year.
